History

In the summer of 1906, the original St. Sebastian church was built on the corner of Highway 11 and 94th street, on land donated by the Corliss Engine Company. A stove was donated from the
railroad depot, an organ was purchased for $25, St. Louis Parish donated old splintery pews, and St. Rose Parish donated an old altar, which had been stored in a barn. The cost of the new building was $4,000.

The year following the Jubilee the parish broke ground on January 16, 1956 for its new school. It is hard to explain the importance that Catholics placed in their own Catholic school at this time. It was more than a matter of pride and accomplishment. This was worth an enormous sacrifice to the entire parish, as it remains today.
The school was built at a cost of $325,000. It opened in the fall of 1956 with an enrollment of 215 students. A two-day Open House with dancing and festival was held to dedicate the new school.
